The sports industry has been growing at a flying rate in the last three decades. Particularly sports such as basketball, football, rugby, etc. Media advancements, sociological and technological advancements among just a few have progressed vastly and given a new platform to all sports. However, many sports have been lingered and diminished and are slowly losing value because of the lack of innovation and interest. This paper tackles the transition of water polo in two completely different cultures, Switzerland, and Croatia. These two countries have cultures which are very different in every aspect and particularly in sports, which renders it very intriguing to compare them. The paper will be based massively around the sociological aspect of water polo and sports, demonstrating how much of an influence social aspects have on athletes in the modern world. This paper will provide the beginning and history of water polo, the latter in two different countries. The thesis analyses the extent to which cultural differences influence differences in sport, more specifically in water polo. It looks at the social and sociological aspects of sport, as well as the factors that influence changes in water polo. In comparing the two cultures, it is interesting to observe similarities and differences in the challenges faced by water polo today. To make the thesis comprehensive, interviews with players from both cultures are used. They describe the slight changes in water polo and compare the differences in the game, but also in the perception of water polo, depending on the culture.
