Abstract
Za razvitak današnjih modernih Olimpijskih igara zaslužan je francuski barun Pierre de Coubertin koji je došao na ideju osnivanja Međunarodnog olimpijskog odbora i pokretanje Olimpijskih igara u kojima bi sudjelovale sve zemlje svijeta. Tako su prve moderne Olimpijske igre simbolično održane 1896. godine u Ateni po uzoru na antičke. Otada one se održavaju svake četvrte godine, a od 1924. godine počele su se održavati i Zimske Olimpijske igre. Brojne su organizacije uključene u organizaciju Olimpijskih igara. One sve zajedno čine Olimpijski pokret. Pravila i načela po kojima djeluju regulirana su Olimpijskom poveljom. Danas se sport općenito, pa tako i Olimpijske igre suočavaju sa problemom dopinga, te su na natjecanjima postrožene kontrole i testiranja. Olimpijski pokret stvara prihode kroz nekoliko programa. Međunarodni olimpijski odbor upravlja prijenosom prava, u svijetu znani TOP program sponzorstva koji je glavni izvor prihoda. Ali također, postoje i veliki troškovi, pogotovo za zemlje domaćine Olimpijskih igara. Tako su Olimpijske igre u Sočiju 2014. proglašene najskupljim Igrama dosada.
